Marcel Duchamp, The Unhappy Readymade
Re-installation (replica) of Marcel Duchamp's Ready-made malheureux, the instructions for which were cabled by Duchamp in Buenos Aires to his sister Suzanne Duchamp in Paris in 1919.
Hanging on strings directly above the KMD, from the balcony of the immediately adjacent building at No.1 Place d'Armes, is a geometry textbook—Géometrie descriptive par Louis Kollros, Professeur à l’École politechnique fédérale, published by Art Institut Orell Füssli, Zurich 1918—which will remain exposed to the weather for the duration of the whole year. The wind will “go through the book, choose its own problems, turn and tear out the pages.” The sun and the rain will slowly decompose the knowledge contained in the book until it has ultimately returned to nature in its entirety.
The Unhappy Readymade will be on view the whole year through, every day, around the clock, and free of charge.
