CCA Andratx is very pleased to present JUST ADD WATER!, a group show curated by Patricia Asbaek, especially conceived for the CCA Kunsthalle.
JUST ADD WATER! presents a wide range of carefully selected works by approximately 20 international artists that have all used the subject of water in their own, characteristic and fascinating way. The exhibition explores the representation of water as a theme in a wide array of media including painting, video, drawing, photography and sculpture.
Water is the precursor for all life and therefore it has been, is and always will be a motif of inspiration, awe, joy and fear. By highlighting how water can be used realistically, symbolically and metaphorically, the exhibition conveys and interprets the representation of water in inspiring and challenging ways. A flowing stream, a turbulent ocean or a calm lake can help us determine the overall mood of the artwork. The presence of water often has a deeper symbolic meaning, creating a feeling of pureness or life.
Elina Brotherus is one of the most exciting and internationally acclaimed photographers from Finland and a frequent guest at CCA Andratx. Her photos are self-portraits investigating the relationship between individual and space, often in relation to landscapes, nature and water. From a hidden cove in Mallorca we have nude photos by Kathe Burkhart, a New York based photographer best known for her signature Liz Taylor Series of paintings. A painting from German artist Dietmar Lutz also has strong ties to Mallorca as it depicts a familiar sight from the beaches, a tourist man in a bathing suit. Two works by English artist Rupert Norfolk can be seen at the exhibition, both are excellent examples of his very meticulous style. Here seen by blowing graphite powder on the sheets of paper such that it forms little drops resembling water drops. In the captivating video installation “Nomad” by Danish artist Eva Koch, human figures fight the elements of nature as they walk in an endless line on a narrow mole extended between sky and sea, crashing waves at their feet.
In the same way, the works by the many other artists included in this group exhibition highlight the natural and the symbolic as well as the personal and universal meaning, when conveying the representation of water.
The curator of the exhibition, Patricia Asbaek, has been dedicated to create one of the most impressive private cultural centres in Europe. The CCA Andratx has not only hosted a number of contemporary art exhibitions, but also includes an Artists-in-Residence Program admitting some of the most talented younger artists from around the world. Several works from the exhibition JUST ADD WATER! have been made by artists from the CCA Artist-In-Residence Program. The island of Mallorca with its many beaches, coves and the mesmerizing ocean all around is an inspiration that cannot be denied.
