Re: Thank You, Sir

Dear Ms. Lieberman,

As an art dealer and writer on the art market, I enjoyed your article. However, you have to consider the “other side” of investing in art. Namely, when Irving Blum bought his Warhol “Liz,” he did it 40 years ago — when there was no asurance that Warhol would survive the test of time. If he took the risk and bought the work (and managed to hang onto it), then he deserves the financial rewards that come with it.

Sincerely,
Richard Polsky

BTW—whoever writes the headlines for Scene & Herd is fabulous.

“Thank you sir”—great mix of the obvious spanking ref with a bit of a “please sir I want some more” for the oliver twist pickets.

Whose the editor and where did they go to school? I want to send my son there.

just going thru old interviews today seems like the collector from yester year - blume being among those mentioned, did so with more of joie la vie for time spent with the living artist, porthole perhaps on the down low into there lives, where now it seems to be an activity engaged in much more more so with the mindset gambler - not so much an safaris adventure set on discovering the “new” as the rush being produced thru a search for “key” to a relatively predictable system... (knowing who is set up for which shows and which reviews in advance)... where not so much an intellectual or critical dialouge is required but more so the logic of say horse raceing where petigree and providance become the qualifiers and qualifiers. Anyone one who is to put the can back on the shelf and dare to place warhols place in history as only as important as that of his subjects is proof and proper of the anemic state of the Art world which negates not only the power of contempory Art but that of all time...

ha. welcome to operation, gentrification not going well (alot of “upper class” looking kids have been moving in) i suspect this is causing trouble, we are working on operation painkillers and eating the gift basket from work and lookin for a new appt. lease is almost up - +++disco caravan+++ but really. this “it goes with my icon of the day” bullshit writing is dust in the wind. Warhol is more then that, besides most of the portaits are the weaker of the oevuer and not his strongest work. It is surprising to me with how low pay writing is that most people are so willing to be mediocre and throw away there changes of anything significant.

So this is permanence, love’s shattered pride.
What once was innocence, turned on it’s side.
A cloud hangs over me, marks every move,
Deep in the memory, of what once was love.

Oh how I realised how I wanted time,
Put into perspective, tried so hard to find,
Just for one moment, thought I’d found my way.
Destiny unfolded, I watched it slip away.

Excessive flashpoints, beyond all reach,
Solitary demands for all I’d like to keep.
Let’s take a ride out, see what we can find,
A valueless collection of hopes and past desires.

I never realised the lengths I’d have to go,
All the darkest corners of a sense I didn’t know.
Just for one moment, I heard somebody call,
Looked beyond the day in hand, there’s nothing there at all.

Now that I’ve realised how it’s all gone wrong,
Gottas find some therapy, this treatment takes too long.
Deep in the heart of where sympathy held sway,
Gotta find my destiny, before it gets too late.

After moving to Los Angeles, Pommier (Pierce Brosnan), a cultural anthropologist and his wife, Niki (Anna Maria Montecelli) are attacked by a group of what appears to be angry street kids. It turns out that the punky group are not urban riff raff, but in fact, evil Eskimo spirits called the Innuat which have been haunting Pommier across the planet. Eventually driven mad by the spirits, Brosnan transfers his persona into Dr. Flax (Lesley-Anne Downs). In order to rid herself of the malady, she joins Niki and searches out the Innuat.

the ugly heavy palms,

I won't blame you,
instead
I will remember the kisses
our lips raw with love
and how you gave me
everything you had
and how I
offered you what was left of
me,
and I will remember your small room
the feel of you
the light in the window
your records
your books
our morning coffee
our noons our nights
our bodies spilled together
sleeping
the tiny flowing currents
immediate and forever
your leg my leg
your arm my arm
your smile and the warmth
of you
who made me laugh

They can’t dig what they can’t use
If they stick to themselves
They’d be much less abused

Play me a little, oh yeah

Well if you want me to be your only man

And invitations to teenage parties
Dress in white one said, with quotations
From someone’s wife, a famous writer
In the nineteen-twenties
When you’re young you find inspiration
In anyone who’s ever gone
And opened up a closing door
She said: we were never feeling bored

’cause we were never being boring
We had too much time to find for ourselves
And we were never being boring
We dressed up and fought, then thought: make amends
And we were never holding back or worried that
Time would come to an end

i don't think artists have an economic or social class status the way the rest of the world does...in a way most are dirt poor, striving to be entertained in the company of kings, like a court jester or a clown unless you have a trust fund and then what? your friends buy your work so galleries like you but you don't really care about anything because you don't have to so your art is mediocre, how do you see things?

Re: Thank You, Sir

by Jareth (05.21.05 07:28 pm)

me personally? allot of people i spend time with hold pretty repeatable places in status worlds, and allot are my subjects, i feel we entertain each other - clearly court jester is not degrading in my mind .... – but it is questionable as to if the final product is even “Art”. For the most part i feel like it is like anything else people flock together that hold commonalties, people act of genuinely good intentions but prefer safety. I think a lot of poor people don’t hold the “status” of Artist, because they are not pro. Generally in NYC I think you have to be fairly wealthy to be successful.

William Kentridge
WED MAY 25 @ 6:30 PM
Kentridge creates varied works that reflect a deep engagement with issues of history and memory. His work alludes to a complex, multilayered notion of history, revealing how much the actor is acted upon and calling into question notions of agency.

Capsule review.

It had its moments.

But Danny Boyle and Guy Ritchie have nothing to worry about.

And Clive Owens got nothing to worry about. And even Michelle Pfeiffer's got nothing to worry about.

the cheerful one, he was also coaching a guy who was an alum from our hs who was in the top 50 runners so he met this guy on the course right before heart break hill, to pace him, etc , then he went and got breakfast and then he came back to the route to meet me- great guy

Well I love the genre of indie crime flik—the really clever ones with many plot twists—Snatch, Shallow Grave, Red Rock West, The Last Seduction.

So Layer Cake is in this vein, but it just wasnt really fun. Or cinematic. Snatch had some breathtakingly genius cinematic moments. Like that part in the cars with the milk flying and the multiple viewpoints. And some terriffic humor and characters. Layer Cake had its moments but really couldnt touch its predecessors. The ending is the very best part. No spoiler for you!

Lock Stock and 2 smoking Barrels—Well they get you to really like Clive Owen. Probably was the kid. So this guy in Layer Cake is no Clive.

And Siena Miller looks a lot like Michelle Pfeiffer. But so far, no cigar.

Yes and know. Little Gina Wincos, came 2 nyc from MI, knew jKoons since they had the same foundation and printmaking classes @ MI. Her father was VP of all N amerikan Exon operations, set her up entirely w/ entire floor on Prince. her shit was so bad she couldn't draw flies. Eventually gave up her drek and managed 2 weasel her way in2 screen play, has credits on the Princess Diaries (so bad i don think even koons would call it kitsch). Now Hollywood. Mayb there's hope fo ‘I du Video’ boy.

I helped move a friend up and wound up staying. First rehabing/fixture fee thing; screening films @ Film Archives; preparator; eventually curator, eventually painter through contacts curating. Hang out get to know who u can trust and u can survive. Helps 2 know how 2 paint something that both kicks and seduces. The pleasure of paint, metaphorically and metonymically. Yeah go ahead jArf, u can google.

Paik and all the old Fluxists who hung @ the Film Archives. Yoko Ono wood often bring JLennon from the village 2c Sirk or AG stuff while the chauffeur kept the bentley running outside. Donald Judd, and oldies like Motherwell and Frankenthaler were all from wealth.

But then on another other hand, Warhol and Basquiat had little. Koons was from comfortable.

But we r missing what use 2 b the major road 2 success:
1. WHO U R FUKING.
2. GAY: WHO R U FUKING.

Having no time to step back and consider what they have been doing or will be doing next, the character who has something to hide soon passes the point of no return, erroneously believing that any course of action is preferable to being found out or admitting the truth themselves. This way they get deeper and deeper into trouble. The protagonist is usually presented sympathetically, encouraging the audience to identify with them and hope for their success.

Been thinking about that all day zip. Delusion, artifice, lies...and the pleasure of paint. And the pleasure of film, or video, or music, or food clothing and shelter.

Because I certainly am pursuing my pleasure and it gets harder to come by. But isnt it the ultimate lie? Its a lie in the present, and a lie in the end. So how can you justify painting a beautiful picture? Or even a sadly beautiful picture?

How is it that pleasure is a lie and a truth at the same time?

Oh, a storm is threat'ning
My very life today
If I don't get some shelter
Oh yeah, I'm gonna fade away

War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

Ooh, see the fire is sweepin'
Our very street today
Burns like a red coal carpet
Mad bull lost its way

War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

Rape, murder!
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

Rape, murder!
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

Rape, murder!
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

The floods is threat'ning
My very life today
Gimme, gimme shelter
Or I'm gonna fade away

War, children, it's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away
It's just a shot away

We'll be able to fly (don't fear the reaper)
Baby I'm your man

Are together in eternity (Romeo and Juliet)
40,000 men and women everyday (like Romeo and Juliet)
40,000 men and women everyday (redefine happiness)
Another 40,000 coming everyday (we can be like they are)
Come on baby (don't fear the reaper)

Baby I'm your man

Love of two is one
Here but now they're gone
Came the last night of sadness
And it was clear she couldn't go on
Then the door was open and the wind appeared
The candles blew then disappeared
The curtains flew then he appeared (saying don't be afraid)
Come on baby (and she had no fear)
And she ran to him (then they started to fly)
They looked backward and said goodbye (she had become like they are)
She had taken his hand (she had become like they are)
Come on baby (don't fear the reaper)

We are building a loft and studio space ifor 5 people n a 2100 sqft warehouse space in East Wiliamsburg. Bathroom and kitchen are already installed. Building a loft for 5 people is a big project that will take at least the summer and require time and money for materials. We are all serious artists (video, installation, performance, painting, etc) and we're also really into playing music and tribal debauchery. Space is near Grahm stop on the L line. Rent is $520 each. Call us if youre psyched. (617) 445. 3360 Ask for David.

if it sounds to good to be true, it prob. is... “require time and money for materials” and who has the lease?.. already sounds like a scam...
am looking for new space however, 4 people, present landlord is very understanding and willing to work with us on a reasonable check out date...

Re: Thank You, Sir

You gotta ask:
How long is the lease for?
How much in materials?
How much space do you get?
Privacy?
Hot water?
Electrical circuits?

I guess a true boho doesnt care.

Re: Thank You, Sir

loft just means big open space,.. usually over something commerical or around so you can be loud, alot of times people make tiny unpartitioned rooms in them and rent them to cover there rent. w-burg is full of tini tiny slumloads, - not such a bad deal if you are going to spend just a short peroid of time in a area to stay in one, it is pretty hard to get a full loft at this point for a resonable place.

One fond memory: sitting on the lawn at my HS every day reading about Patty in the Chron. Stupid and romantic teen that I was, I always thought for sure she really did change her mind and become a revolutionary.

Me and Suzanne loved Patty Hearst. Yknow what happened to Suzanne? Went drivin with a drunk rich guy. He smashed into a tree. Killed her, he lived. Not only that, he got off. There's a crime story for ya.

Patty's book “Every Secret Thing” is a must read.

You moved like honey in my dream last night
Yeah, some old fires were burning
You came near to me and you endeared to me
But you couldn't quite discern me

Does that scare you? I'll let you run away
But your heart will not oblige you
You'll remember me like a melody
Yeah, I'll haunt the world inside you

And my big secret — Gonna win you over
Slow like honey, heavy with mood

I'll let you see me, I'll covet your regard
I'll invade your demeanor
And you'll yield to me like a scent in the breeze
And you'll wonder what it is about me

It's my big secret — Keeping you coming
slow like honey, heavy with mood

Though dreams can be deceiving
Like faces are to hearts
They serve for sweet relieving
When fantasy and reality lie too far apart

So I stretch myself across, like a bridge
And I pull you to the edge
And stand there waiting
Trying to attain
The end to satisfy the story
Shall I release you?
Must I release you?
As I rise to meet my glory

But my big secret
Gonna hover over your life
Gonna keep you reaching
When I'm gone like yesterday
When I'm high like heaven
When I'm strong like music
'Cuz I'm slow like honey, and
Heavy with mood

and I write u r so out of the loop, cause he mentioned that i shouldn't change my kids diaper i should change mine. What da dumpfuk doesn't realize is no one's used Diapers since the 80's, it's all Pampers/Huggies. Can u bleev that shit? fuking diapers; how far removed from reality r these people?

and it's like the other day, i get this call from a younger artist who did some nice stuff four years ago. He's bitchin big time cause they decided to drop his ass as he has not produced much that has sold, he's produced, but just got 2 moralizing about a public fuked up on consumer shit. So he wants me 2 call the director and intercede. And I'm like, I hate 2 tell u, but at some point u gotta ante up 2 the fact that this is also a business, and it has gotten more so over the decades. The Pat Hearns and Paula Coopers r dying off, literally, and hot items turn cold real fast. Look @ all the hotties @ 2000 and look @ all the new hotties in 05. U gotta find something u can keep developing; and then find @ least 2 more things u can keep developing, and then du them all in drwgs, (oops sorry Jar) then prints, mayb go 3d, since after all it is only when painters du sculpture do we get anywhere. This usually leads 2 a new series and so on. No 1 gives a shit about the 1 shhow u sold out. It's whether u keep selling all year long.

Now when u r glib like me and can keep coming up w/ new shit 2 say, well $$$$$$$$$$$. Otherwise u have 2 stay here and Du Video w/ Jarf arf and bzzzip. Still waiting 2 hear from that grant committee? Yippie.

Always take the bait, eh chum?

I myself mommied using cloth diapers in the early 90s—didnt want to add to the landfill. Glad to know you used huggies. Thought you said you were some kind of eco warrior—guess not even in the most simple way.

Paintings probably lazy too.

Oh i so win again. Honey hocks said:

Yeah, so instead u used cloth diapers which had 2b laundered adding tons of dioxin to the water system, burned countless tons of coal 2 provide the electricity for the hot water (unless u were clueless and used cold which killed no bacteria). If u used a service they use even more energy to steam clean and dry.

So yeah dumbshit I did check it out and everyone said it's 6 of 1 half a dozen of another, But at least my huggies were ground up and now comprise the fibers making up a park bench or bus bumper somewhere. Your honor i rest my case proving once and 4 all Honey aka Jarf Barf Art is fuking stupid and uninformed.

(lets c now, I got the Paik/Viola, didn't know ptg tech, can't draw, clueless 2 the xchange sys, SEXIST on the chicken Peta thing, Diaper no no, I gotta start writing these down oh yeah the Ageism thing.)

To the Editor:

Your paean to Alice L. Walton, the Wal-Mart heir who recently purchased Asher B. Durand's landscape painting “Kindred Spirits” for $35 million (“A Determined Heiress Plots an Art Collection,” Arts pages, May 14), ignored a grand inherent irony.

All that Wal-Mart money was gleaned from the systematic destruction of the very American landscape Ms. Walton so expensively celebrates. Not to mention the equally systematic obliteration of thousands of family businesses and of course the creation of hundreds of thousands of sweatshop jobs.

The robber barons of yore, through contrition or vanity, also established enduring cultural institutions, but surely in this age of alleged transparency, it behooves the newspaper of record to make at least passing reference to the human and environmental price we all pay to satisfy Ms. Walton's ambition.

Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will find them gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.
