Yes, very unfashionable. 1500 looky-loos? Give me a break.

Re: Role Call

by Jareth (05.19.05 12:29 pm)

every been to a ren fair, also chabby chic... quite fashionable really nother example of “ironic slumming”

Re: Role Call

by marker2000 (05.19.05 01:04 pm)

“Ironic slumming” is not fashionable. Maybe for those who gave up or those just getting to the 90's. Or is that now retro? So sheepish.

Re: Role Call

by Jareth (05.19.05 01:13 pm)

right.
ironic slumming is always fashionable, it just comes under diff. names - and places. some people are just incapable of coming up with there own content.

Re: call it what you will, ironic slumming, data mineing,

usually some form of the rich making fun of the poor- ill-will, insincerity, ill humor, make me ill

Re: Role Call

ya i noticed. very funny. i think “they” fail to be able to entertain themselves period. - hense the allways lashing out. i guess when get board of fireing your nanny realize your parents didn't want you and you have no friends you have to pass the time some how.

must be nice to have so many ‘serious’ problems-

Re: Backlash

Goes both ways don't it?

I talked to this lady at the Armory Show.

I asked her if she didnt think this contributed to a bunker mentality in the art world.

She said no, art needs to be defended.

Fanta dude, fanta.

Musings from one of our correspondents

The Cassandra Report® features uncensored Lifestyle Reports written by a few of our correspondents. The following is an excerpt from a report written by an 18-year-old female high school senior in New York City for the April 2005 Cassandra Report®:

A few years ago I would have said that my generation’s defining characteristic would be apathy. While I’m still afraid of what lurks out there in suburbia, at least I can say that that idea has been seriously challenged here at home. While there’s a definite indifference prevalent even in [my high school’s] classrooms (my Psychology teacher remarked that I knew a lot about Medicaid coverage of abortion in this country to which I told her I make it my job to know about the rights that our government is taking away from us.) However, there is also restlessness. We need leaders to focus our energy. Right now there are all these really smart, inspired kids, who know that they don’t want anything to do with the hypocrisy of their parents or the government or Wall Street, so they turn to drugs and bluegrass music. I’m confident in my generation’s potential, if some sort of alternative was provided. If some sort of artist coalition came out and showed us that we’re not simply putting off the inevitable sale of our soul. After telling my parents’ friends that I want to be a writer, I want to stop hearing the response, “No, but what are you going to do?” I want to stop seeing girls who are a size ten, wearing a size four, because they say it makes them look thinner. I want to stop seeing jeans with zippers up the butt. I want to stop seeing two hands go up in my English class when I ask, “Who here has read Catcher in the Rye?” I want all the guys in my high school to stop cheating on their girlfriends. I want “liberal” to be a compliment again. I want to see drive, desire, and determination. That will be my generation.

One of the wonderful things about a museum is how you're jolted into confronting art from strange and wonderful civilizations and you look and learn and expand your horizons.
::: Sister Wendy Beckett :::
I think a single sentence by Van Gogh is better than the whole work of all the art critics and art historians put together.
::: John Olsen :::
I’m not an abstractionist. I’m not interested in the relationship of color or form or anything else. I’m interested only in expressing basic human emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on.
::: Mark Rothko :::
Painting is so poetic, while sculpture is more logical and scientific and makes you worry about gravity.
::: Damien Hirst :::
I tend to like things that already exist.
::: Jasper Johns :::
Art is much less important than life, but what a poor life without it.
::: Robert Motherwell :::
What I am seeking is not the real and not the unreal but rather the unconscious, the mystery of the instinctive in the human race.
::: Amedeo Modigliani :::
I can't always reach the image in my mind.. almost never, in fact.. so that the abstract image I create is not quite there, but it gets to the point where I can leave it.
::: Chuck Close :::
Reason is powerless in the expression of Love.
::: Rumi :::
The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection.
::: Michelangelo :::
A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do.
::: Bob Dylan :::
What counts most is finding new ways to get the world down in paint on my own terms.
::: Georg Baselitz :::
It is necessary to work, if not from inclination, at least from despair. Everything considered, work is less boring than amusing oneself.
::: Charles Baudelaire :::
Believe it or not, I can actually draw.
::: Jean Michel Basquiat :::
I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way.. things I had no words for.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Take the attitude of a student, never be too big to ask questions, never know too much to learn something new.

An artist chooses his subjects: that is the way he praises.
::: Friedrich Nietzsche :::
To restrict the artist is a crime. It is to murder germinating life.
::: Egon Schiele :::
I've become more comfortable, knowing that I can sleep until two and hang out until ten in the morning and don't have to worry about losing my job. But I'm not a big star. I'm not even a twinkle.. I'm just a rumour.
::: Tom Waits :::
Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one.
::: Albert Einstein :::
I don't get into “becauses.” When you come into a studio you see a number of works. My habit is to go to the one I like most. If you start to say “because” you get into art jargon.
::: Clement Greenberg :::
Painters must speak through paint, not through words.
::: Hans Hofmann :::
My breakthrough came very late in life, really only starting when I was fifty years old. But at that time I felt as though I had the strength for new deeds and ideas.
::: Edvard Munch :::
I have never been against new art as such; some of it is good, much is crap, most is somewhere in between.

Busch-Reisinger Museum

“'As though my body were naught but ciphers': Crises of Representation in Fin-de-Sičcle Vienna” focuses on the parallel crises that took place in visual and verbal representation in Vienna around the turn of the 20th century. Concentrating on the themes of decoration, abstraction, and the feminine, this installation presents works on paper, illustrated books, and textile samples by artists such as Gustav Klimt and Josef Hoffmann alongside early editions of key publications by Nietzsche, Freud, and others. (Yawn)

Fogg Museum

“From Mind, Heart, and Hand: Persian, Turkish, and Indian Drawings from the Stuart Cary Welch Collection” is one of a few major exhibitions ever to focus exclusively upon drawings from South Asia and the Middle East, a rich but understudied field of both Indian and Islamic art. The exhibition features works distinguished by their beauty and historical significance. (Really Hot!)

“To Students of Art and Lovers of Beauty: Highlights from the Collection of Grenville L. Winthrop” will present nearly 100 paintings and sculptures, some of which have just returned from an international tour. The salon-style installation will focus on Winthrop's extraordinary holdings of 19th century French, British, and American art, including works by Blake, David, Degas, Gericault, Ingres, Monet, Pissaro, Renoir, Rodin, Rossetti, Sargent, and Whistler. (Some hot Gustave Moreau, Barye and Blake here)

Sackler Museum

“The Sport of Kings: Art of the Hunt in Iran and India” presents paintings, ceramics, decorative arts, and weaponry - most 200-500 years old - exploring the rich traditions of the hunt in West and South Asia. (Totally hot falcons, white elephants and lions, all exquisitely crafted esp shield made of buffalo hide, wow))

On Tuesday, June 7th there will be a march from Brooklyn Borough Hall
to a
Rally at City Hall

The March and Rally are Against Bloomberg's Sweetheart Development
Deals
Around the City, Against Bruce Ratner's Proposed 17 High Rises and
Arena in
Brooklyn And FOR Community First! Development

Start Gathering at Brooklyn Borough Hall at 4:30 (start time 5pm) or be
at
the Southern Tip of City Hall Park by 6:15
Borough Hall: 209 Joralemon Street (2/3/4/5/A/C/F/M/R to Borough Hall &
Court Street)
City Hall (2/3 to Park Place, 4/5/N/R/W to City Hall)

The rally and march is tackling the citywide epidemic of backroom
sweetheart development deals, led by the Bloomberg Adminstration which
ignore the the needs, hopes and desires of communities throughout the
city.
Instead these sweetheart deals are trampling on and destroying
communities,
spending massive amounts of public dollars, and primarily benefitting
developers.

WHEN DO OUR COMMUNITIES START GET SWEETHEART DEALS!?

Please make every effort to join your fellow New Yorkers at this
demonstration and please copy and past this announcement to email to
your
list of friends, colleagues and anyone else! If you would like to
download
a flier about this event, you can do so here:

Paris Hilton ready to get more serious
Hotel heiress says she's hanging up her party hat and trying to build her businesses.

NEW YORK — After years of being a ubiquitous presence on the global nightlife scene, dancing on tabletops and sauntering down red carpets from Australia to Los Angeles, Paris Hilton says she is eager to leave her Red Bull-fueled evenings behind and make the leap from sex kitten to savvy business titan.
